WASHINGTON — Mazda North American Operations is recalling 1,368,500 vehicles in the U.S., including the 1989-'98 Mazda MPV and 1990-'95 Mazda 323, because the ignition switch may overheat, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The recall also includes the 1990-'98 Mazda Protégé, 1992-'93 Mazda MX-3, 1993-?95 Mazda 929, 1993-'97 Mazda MX-6 and 1993-'98 Mazda 626.
"Grease applied to the contact points inside the ignition switch may become conductive and overheat," said NHTSA in its recall summary. "If the ignition switch overheats, there would be an increased risk of a fire."
There have been no reports of accidents or injuries, Mazda said in a statement.
"Once the vehicle is running, this situation does not directly affect vehicle drivability or operation, or the operation of any safety devices or features in the vehicle," it said.
Mazda dealers will replace the ignition switch. The recall is expected to begin on December 15. Owners can contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500.
